The city of Tg. Jiu,
largest city in the county of Gorj, is located in Oltenia, southwestern part of
Romania. Tg-Jiu has a population of over 110,000, and before the revolution of
December 1989 there was no Baptist Church in this city, or in the entire county.
In March 1990, a small group of Christians decided to
start a Baptist Church in Tg-Jiu. Before the end of that year, Cornel Hudulin
became its ordained pastor. They held their worship services in Christian homes
but these became soon too small. For a while they to rented a hall at the local
Cultural Center and later purchased a house and remodeled it into a church. As
time went by and their number increased even that house became inadequate. By
God's grace, a lot was purchased located downtown Tg-Jiu and a construction
project started in May 1994. This was quite an adventure by which God tested the
faith of the Christians in Tg. Jiu. He bless the workers and answered all their
prayer requests. After six years of toil and sacrifices, the dream came true and
the church dedication took place in March 2000.
During this time 15 baptismal services were held first
at the river, the Cultural Center, the front yard of the old property, and
finally in the new sanctuary. The current number of the members is 140; there
are about 40 children who are involved in various church activities. The church
has a choir of 25 young people who praise God through the gift of music, with a
lot of dedication for this ministry and being also involved in numerous
evangelistic events.
It is our goal to contribute to the spiritual growth of
our church members in order to reach maturity in their faith, to get actively
involved in various ministries, to reach as many as possible for Christ and for
the glory of our God.
The church choir has been a great support in
evangelizing this area and in all the churches where it has been invited to
sing. Among the places visited in the past months are the churches of Timisoara,
Carpinis, Hunedoara, Raul de Mori, Salasu de Sus, Targu Carbunesti, Copacioasa,
Prigoria, Lupeni, Marasesti (county of Mehedinti), and Obarsia Closani.
